前天思思的新钢琴终于到家了，新鲜劲还没过，她练琴主动多了。
今天就从 play the piano 说起，讲讲英语中“弹奏不同的乐器”有什么奥妙之处。
传统英语教学把乐器分成了西洋乐器和民族乐器，关于“弹奏乐器”的古典规定如下：
西洋乐器前需加定冠词 the, 如 play the piano； 民族乐器前无需加定冠词 the, 如 play erhu。

从“百度知道”到“知乎”再到各种英语学习类公众号，这条规定看起来都铁板钉钉啊。
且慢，如果查一下语料库，你就会发现除了 play the piano，play piano 也是相当极其非常多啊。如果觉得语料库太专业，那么你可以留意一下美剧，play piano 同样高频。
而且而且，人教版教材嫌事儿还不够乱，猝不及防地在七下课本里加了这么个例子：
这下你总该凌乱了吧，这到底还分不分西洋乐器和民族乐器了，还加不加 the 了？
严谨如我，怎么可能视而不见，于是我就骚扰了几位英语母语人士：1位英国人，2位美国人，1位喀麦隆英语地区人士。
这几位都是至少精通母语英语和汉语的优秀翻译，因此语言功底不存在问题，相应地他们的回答也有一定的参考性。
问题一： play the piano 和 play piano 是否都是对的，有无区别?
英： 严格来讲需要 the。美式英语，尤其口语，不会用 the。
美1：play the piano and play piano 好像没有区别吧。
美2：i play piano/ he plays piano 都对，加 the 也都可以。
喀： 应该说 play the piano。
问题二： 对于中国传统乐器，到底需不需要加 the, 比如应该说 play erhu 还是 play the erhu?
英： 我会加 the。
美1：you don't need to add "the".
美2：我觉得 erhu 也可以这样（注：即加不加 the 都可以）。如果对方不知道erhu 是什么，最好加 the，强调是个东西。
喀： 加 the。
看了之后，问题解决了吗？ 好像只解决了一部分。不过其中美国人2给了个原则：...but there is a difference in formality, if a document or personal dialogue is informal, then just say "play 什么". But if more formally written document or dialogue, then you should consider writing "play the 什么". （也就是非正式用语不加 the, 正式用语加 the。）
来来来，我们总结一下：
关于“弹奏乐器”，不用区分西洋乐器和民族乐器，乐器前加不加 the 都可以，但如果是正式用语，最好加上 the。
