From today, filmgoers will crowd cinemas across America for what may be a record opening weekend for "Avengers: Infinity War".

The film from Disney's Marvel Studios is the 19th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring a star-studded cast representing virtually every superhero introduced in the series thus far.

Their task is to stop the villainous Thanos.

The fate of the universe hangs in the balance.

So do the film－makers, who succeed with "Infinity War" by embracing the limitations of the genre, and letting the audience in on the joke.

This may be the funniest Marvel film yet.
