The first edition of Shanghai Curators Lab (SCL) officially launched at Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (SAFA) 9:30 a.m. on November 5th. As the lead professors, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, the Director of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Yongwoo Lee, the professor of SAFA at Shanghai University, and Wang Dawei, the Executive Dean of SAFA have attended onsite. With 22 SCL curators, they were gathering together to witness the opening ceremony of SCL.
2018年11月5日上午9:30，首届上海策展人实验室（Shanghai Curators Lab， SCL）在上海美术学院（南院）正式开营。里沃利城堡当代艺术博物馆馆长卡罗琳·克里斯托夫-巴卡基耶夫（Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev）和上海美术学院教授李龙雨(Yongwoo Lee)作为SCL的主导师，与上海美术学院执行院长汪大伟共同出席开幕式，并与22位参与策展人一同见证首届上海策展人实验室（SCL）的顺利启动。

Shanghai Curators Lab (SCL) is an intensive and challenging residence program for young curators hosted by SAFA, organized by Shanghai International Art City (SIAC) Research Institute, and in collaboration with Shanghai Biennale (hosted by Power Station of Art). The SCL aims to be an open forum for experimental, critical and discursive discussion on the ecology of curatorial practices and intercultural platforms in the period of radical transformation of the social framework.
上海策展人实验室（SCL）由上海美术学院主办、上海吴淞国际艺术城发展研究院承办、第12届上海双年展（上海当代艺术博物馆）协办，是一个面向年轻策展人的集中而富有挑战的驻留项目。其目标是以国际视野，面向未来，在多元文化背景下，用探索、实验、体验的方式培养能引领世界文化艺术潮流的策展人。同时，为实验性、批判性讨论搭建开放的论坛，探讨社会体系剧烈转变时期策展实践和跨文化的生态。

Driven by SAFA and BAOWU Group, Shanghai International Art City (SIAC) research institute serves for the construction of 2035 Shanghai city sub-center under the background of the overall transformation of Shanghai Wusong industrial zone. Wang Dawei, the Executive Dean of SAFA gave the opening speech to introduce SCL, hoping it could take advantages of the early stage of SIAC to provide younger talents a space of boundless imagination, as well as a platform and an experimental field to demonstrate intelligence and to realize their ideas. This first edition of SCL will continuously develop and expand for the future of Shanghai and all the curators will bring endless vitality.
作为承办方的上海吴淞国际艺术城（SIAC）发展研究院是在上海吴淞工业区整体转型的背景之下，由上海大学上海美术学院与宝武集团共同成立的，服务于上海2035吴淞城市副中心建设。上海美术学院执行院长汪大伟致开幕词，寄语上海策展人实验室（SCL），期待借吴淞国际艺术城建设还是一张白纸的时机，为青年才俊们提供一个无限可能的想象空间，并为实现畅想提供实验场和展示才华的舞台。第一届上海策展人实验室项目将持续发展和壮大，为未来上海的发展注入新的活力。

The lead professor Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev will hold four different lectures and four discussions with curators. She emphasized the importance of art and pointed out that the definition of art is vague, but curators have the knowledge and appreciation to distinguish the qualities of artworks. Here, “Lab” actually offers a global platform to exchange ideas and brainstorming, and she hopes to learn more from these young curators. At the same time, she announced an exciting news that she was recently awarded the Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence, 2019, issued by the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. This award is regarded as the “Pritzker Architecture Prize” in curatorial field, which is designed to reward curatorial innovation and achievement. The lead professor, Yongwoo Lee gave a warm welcome to all. The 22 SCL curators have individually presented themselves, with infinite expectations for this project.
本次项目主导师卡罗琳·克里斯托夫-巴卡基耶夫（Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev）将带来4场不同主题的演讲，并主导参与策展人进行4场研讨。她强调了艺术的重要性，指出艺术的定义很难界定，但策展人拥有的鉴赏能力可以帮助甄别艺术的优劣，“实验室”在这里提供了来自世界各地思想火花碰撞的平台，她期望可以从他们新一代年轻的策展人身上学到更多。同时卡罗琳·克里斯托夫-巴卡基耶夫（Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev）于现场宣布了一个令人欣喜的消息，她最近获得由美国巴德学院策展研究中心（Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College）颁发的2019年巴德策展奖（Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence）,该奖项号称“策展届的普里兹克奖（Pritzker Architecture Prize）”，旨在奖励策展创新和成就。主导师李龙雨(Yongwoo Lee) 教授也对加入的策展人表示了热烈欢迎。在开幕式现场，22位参与策展人学员分别进行了自我介绍，共同表达了对课程的无限期待。

Since the open call for applications, Shanghai Curators Lab has attracted 168 candidates from over 28 countries (around 50 regions), including the United States, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Russia, Canada, Australia, China, etc. Most of the candidates are in art related industries, including gallery and museum curators, independent artists and art academy students. Through the comprehensive inspection and evaluation by lead professors and the representative from the collaborative partner, 22 candidates with an average age of 28 from more than 10 countries including China, UK, Germany, France, Australia, etc. were selected as the participating curators for the 1st SCL.
首届上海策展人实验室(SCL)通过公开招募，共收到来自美国、英国、意大利、德国、法国、俄罗斯、加拿大、澳大利亚、中国等约28个国家（约50个地区）、168名候选人的申请。申请者主要来自艺术相关行业，包括美术馆和画廊策展人、独立艺术家和艺术院校在校学生等。经过专家评审委员会全方位的评审，最终来自中、英、德、法、澳等十余个国家、平均年龄为28岁的22名策展人脱颖而出。

Apart from the lead professors Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, the Director of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, and Yongwoo Lee, professor of SAFA at Shanghai University, other 27 well-known guest lecturers from the art circle were invited to this project. They have provided a good opportunity for curators to communicate with experts from various interdisciplinary fields. The SCL has designed 9 on-site visits and communications, including: The 12th Shanghai Biennale; The 5th West Bund Art& Design; Artist Liu Jianhua’s Studio; ShanghART Gallery (Taopu Space); Zhujiajiao Town; Artist Ding Yi’s Studio; Qiao Space and Tank Shanghai; Wuzhen and Shanghai International Art City (formerly BAOWU Group). Curators will explore the enormous potential of curatorial expansion within different lectures and field trips.
本次上海策展人实验室不仅邀请主导师里沃利城堡(Castello di Rivoli)当代艺术博物馆馆长卡罗琳·克里斯托夫-巴卡基耶夫(Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev)和上海美术学院教授李龙雨(Yongwoo Lee)，更邀请27位艺术圈知名嘉宾讲师加盟助阵，为参与策展人们提供与跨学科领域业内行家共同交流探讨的机会。上海策展人实验室（SCL）精心设计了9场参观考察及现场交流，包括：第12届上海双年展、第五届西岸设计与艺术博览会、艺术家刘建华工作室、香格纳画廊（桃浦空间）、朱家角镇、艺术家丁乙工作室、上海油罐艺术中心和乔空间、乌镇和上海吴淞国际艺术城（原宝武集团）。学员们将在讲座研讨和实地考察中探究策展职能拓展的巨大潜力。
