Pejorative  贬义的,轻蔑的

我这里使用的‘学术’一词,是贬义的。

I am using the word ‘academic’ here in a pejorative sense.

Penalty n. 处罚

最高处罚是最多七年监禁或无上限罚款。

The maximum penalty is up to 7 years imprisonment or an unlimited fine.

Penchant n. 嗜好

她酷爱香槟酒。

She has a penchant for champagne.

Perennial 长久的

小说的主题是男人和女人之间永无休止的冲突。

The novel’s central theme is the perennial conflict between men and women.

Peripatetic 流动的,巡回的

她父亲是军人,所以全家人随军过着一种流动的生活。

Her father was in the army and the family led a peripatetic existence.

Peripheral 边缘的

公司越来越倾向于把像培训这样的非核心业务外包出去。

Companies are increasingly keen to contract out peripheral activities like training.

Permeable 可渗透的

两栖动物的皮肤是透水的。

The skin of amphibians is permeable to water.

Perspicacious 有洞察力的

你真是明察秋毫,问题的原因这么快就找到了。

It was very perspicacious of you to find the cause of the trouble so quickly.

Resonate v. 共鸣

如果这些道德和可持续性的信息可以让他们产生共鸣,你就可以得到连锁反应。

If these messages of ethics and sustainability resonate with them, you get a ripple effect.

Restive 焦躁不安的

因此外来人员日益感到不安也就不足为奇了。

No wonder that the migrants are increasingly restive.

Retreat v. 撤退

The army was forced to retreat after suffering heavy losses.

部队因伤亡惨重被迫撤退。

Reticent 沉默的

她对自己的成就如此缄默。

She is so reticent about her achievements.

Remiss 疏忽的,懈怠的

她在工作中显然马马虎虎。

She had clearly been remiss in her duty.

Renaissance n. 复兴

通俗艺术正在复兴。

Popular art is experiencing a renaissance.

Render v. 呈现

这个概念难以用英语表达。

It’s a concept that is difficult to render into English.

Reprehensible 应受谴责的

他如此不忠,应受谴责。

It was reprehensible of him to be so disloyal.

Repudiate v. 拒绝,否认,与……断绝关系

他拒绝偿还他儿子的一切债务。

He would repudiate all debts incurred by his son.

Reserved 缄默的,预留的

我以琼斯的名字预定了一个房间。

I’ve reserved a room in the name of Jones.
