What's the meaning of travel? What I'm writing here is something between fiction and nonfiction. I try to use as few adjectives as Hemingway would.
What's the meaning of travel? What's the point of it all? Some say it's better to travel hopefully than to arrive. Some say one should travel in style or don't travel at all. And I know a guy who once traveled thousands of kilometers away from home just to enjoy his favourite duck blood spicy soup in a desolate town.
Eons and eons ago, in a small uneventful city lived a man and a girl. They suddenly became so intimate as if there was no tomorrow. Then it had to be a long-distance thing. He could only visit her on May Day holiday and National Day holiday. Sometimes she waited for him at the exit of the train station and sometimes she didn't.Before he arrived they would make plans for the precious days when they could be together.Fortunately, she's in the liveliest cosmopolis in the Eastern Hemisphere where people needn't worry about running out of things to do or places to go to.They strolled aroud famous parks, musemes, malls, zoos and quaint alleys. And he liked the shady boulevard in front of the U.S.Embassy best.
On one May Day holiday when he finally walked up to her, they knowingly abandoned all their elaborate plans made previously. They just stayed in a hotel room for 6 days and didn't go anywhere. For him, that IS the real fucking Meaning of Travel. Six months later, they parted as strangers peacefully in Xizhimen Metro Station. And ever since then he has traveled no more.
If it were Milan Kundera who wrote my story, the ending might be like this: The man became a dissident and had to flee abroad and then came back because he missed life in his homeland so much. While he was making peace with the world, life's twists took over...oh that's too sad and Kitsch.
